Baggage Services

PIA offers a range of baggage services for Economy, Economy Plus, and Business Plus passengers. This section provides helpful information about baggage allowances, as well as a list of restricted items and advice on items that should be packed in your checked baggage.


For the safety of our passengers and aircraft, passengers are prohibited from carrying the following items in either checked or hand baggage:

  • Explosives, munitions, fireworks, and flares
  • Security-type cases/boxes incorporating goods such as lithium batteries or pyrotechnics
  • Compressed gases (flammable, non-flammable, or poisonous) such as butane, propane, aqualung cylinders, lighter fuels, or refills
  • Oxidizing substances such as bleaching powder and peroxides
  • Flammable liquids such as paints and adhesives
  • Flammable solids such as safety matches and articles which are easily ignited
  • Disabling devices such as mace or pepper sprays, with irritant properties
  • Poisons such as arsenic, cyanide, or insecticides
  • Radioactive Materials
  • Corrosive materials such as mercury (which may be contained in thermometers or blood pressure gauges,) acids, alkalis, and wet cell batteries
  • Any other substances which, during a flight, present a danger not covered above, such as magnetized, offensive, or irritating materials

Lighters (butane, absorbed fuel, electric, battery-powered, and novelty lighters) are not to be carried in the carry-on and checked baggage. This ruling by The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) applies to all passengers arriving into or departing from United States of America.

In addition, passengers are not allowed to carry the following items in their hand baggage for passengers’ safety and security reasons. To minimize inconvenience, you are advised to check in or put these items in your checked baggage instead

  • Knives (including hunting knives, swords, and pocket knives)
  • Scissors and any other sharp/bladed objects (e.g. ice-pick, nail clippers) considered illegal by local law.

Do ensure that all your bags are properly labeled, both inside and outside. Include your full name, home and destination addresses and telephone contact information, and remove old destination tags and labels.

Revised International Baggage Allowance

New security rules at various airports have compelled PIA to revise its free baggage allowance for Europe and US destinations to improve baggage service to its valued customers in current scenario.

  • The free baggage allowance will be two pieces of 28 KGS each for business and economy cabin (For USA and Canada Only)
  • Excess Baggage Charges from USA to PAK is 110.00 USD per piece.

AA – Pure Domestic Free baggage allowance & Conditions

Free Baggage Allowance & Excess Baggage Charges on all domestic sectors in Pakistan have been revised as per following on all domestic tickets issued w.e.f December 07, 2013.

Following guidelines must be adhered to while accepting baggage on all domestic flights:

    • Free Baggage Allowance on all domestic sectors will be
Economy : One Piece, maximum of 20 Kg, per passenger
Economy Plus : One Piece, maximum of 25 Kg, per passenger
Business Plus : Two Pieces per passenger with total weight of two pieces not exceeding 30 Kg


  • Excess Baggage will be per piece instead of per kg and additional piece up to 28 Kg will be charged a flat rate of PKR 3000+CED(central excise duty) regardless of the sector.

Mishandled Baggage and Lost Baggage Tracking

PIA believes in, and strives to provide its customers with the most convenient service. But despite our efforts, in the rare case of your baggage being mishandled, we regret the inconvenience caused to you and assure you that the PIA Baggage Services, in collaboration with the Worldwide Tracking System, will track, retrieve and deliver* your lost baggage to your doorstep!

As soon as you are aware of your baggage getting lost, register a complaint in the Baggage services office at the station of arrival. You will be required to provide your baggage details to the Baggage Service officer who shall enter them into our computerized tracking system and issue you a receipt containing the tracking number and mandatory details of your baggage. Please ensure that your name, address, and bag details are correct, as this information will facilitate tracking and retrieval, enabling the Baggage service officers to return your baggage to you, as soon as possible.

Baggage Claim


PIA will not be able to settle the claim if the bag has been labeled with a ‘Limited Release Tag’ and it has been marked with any one of the following:

  • Fragile or unsuitably packed.
  • Packing inadequate.
  • Perishables.
  • Received damaged.

Unchecked Baggage

We feel sorry if any damage occurred to your unchecked baggage however we will not be responsible for any damage to unchecked/carryon baggage.

Checked Baggage

We make every effort to deliver your baggage on time and without any mishandling. However if any delay/damage/loss occurs, we are regretful on that and present our sincere apology.

Settlement of Claims

Any case of delay/ damage/ loss of checked baggage will be settled under the liability limit set by Montreal convention or Warsaw Convention depending upon which convention is applicable in your case. If in a state or jurisdiction none of said convention is applicable and, instead, a local law is applicable, cases of baggage delay/loss/damage will be settled according to that local law.

Procedure to be followed in case of Delay/Damage/Loss of Baggage

1. Delay /Loss of Baggage

  • a) Please accept our apology on delay/loss of your checked baggage. We will make every effort to find and deliver it on your given address as soon as possible.
  • b) In case your baggage is not received on arrival, please contact PIA office immediately at the airport and report with your baggage claim tags/receipts. You will be required to provide details of your missing baggage and contents and reveal if any part of baggage has been received. However PIA will have no liability regarding contents or items contained inside the baggage instead it will follow liability limits set by Montreal or Warsaw convention or any other applicable law.
  • c) In case of delay, PIA is liable to pay reasonable interim relief which will be settled against any final settlement.
  • d) If your baggage does not arrive at the expiration of 21 days from the date on which it ought to have arrived or your checked baggage is declared lost, we will send a compensation form to you at the given address/ email. Once you complete this form and send back to us we will process the case for compensation and ensure that you get the compensation as per applicable convention or law at the earliest.
  • e) In case your baggage is lost while its weight is not recorded, we will assume that the weight was equal to the free baggage allowance given to passengers in your class of travel.

2. Damage of Baggage

  • a) Please accept our apology on damage occurred to your checked baggage. You are requested to please report the damage to PIA office before leaving the airport or as soon as damage is discovered but not later than 07 days from receipt of baggage.
  • b) In case of damage of your baggage, we will assess/ examine it thoroughly. If repairable, we will arrange repair and or if it is beyond repair we will settle your claims as per applicable law or convention.
  • c) PIA will not be liable for any Damage to checked baggage if it results from inherent defect, quality or vice of the Baggage (for example damage to fragile, perishable and other items prohibited to include in checked baggage, please see Article 8.3). Similarly, PIA will not be liable for normal wear and tear, scratches, or any other thing arising due to normal loading/ unloading of checked baggage.

BAGGAGE includes such articles, effects and other personal property of passenger or appropriate for wear, use, comfort or convenience in connection with the trip, it includes both checked and unchecked baggage. Passengers are advised not to keep valuables, cash, jewellery, important documents and precious items in their checked baggage.
CHECKED BAGGAGEis the baggage of which Carrier takes sole custody and for which Carrier has issued a baggage tag.
UN-CHECKED BAGGAGEmeans hand baggage which remain in passenger own custody.

BAGGAGE TAG is a document issued by carrier solely for identification of checked baggage, strap portion of baggage tag is attached to checked baggage and the baggage identification tag portion is given to the passenger.

LIMITED RELEASE TAGtag used for checked baggage of the passenger in case the baggage is found open, torn, perishable, damaged, fragile or improperly packed. This tag limits the liability of the carrier.
